Parasitic Helminths of House Rats in Korea

Abstract
A Study was performed to evaluate the house rats as reservoir host of certain helminths which can provoke zoonotic infections in man.
A total of 184 house rats captured from 14 diffenrent areas of southern Korea was examined for the detection of nematodes and cestodes.
The results obtained were as follows:
1. The captured house rats consisted of 161 Rattus norvegicus (87.5%), 22 R.rattus rufescens (11.9%) and 1 unidentified species.
2. With one or more species of nematodes and cestodes, 64.1! of captured rats carried hilminthic infections. Among them, R. norvegicus showed higher infection rate (58.7%) than R. rattus rufescens (4.9%)
3. The infection rate of nematodes was 50.5% and that of cestodes was 23.4% in those captured rats.
4. The followin 6 species were identified among 184 captured rats throughout the study :
1) Nematoda : Capillaria hepatica 10.9% Heteraris spumosa 36.4% Syphacia obvelata 9.8%
2) Cestoda : Hymenolepis diminuta 7.6% Hymenolepis nana 8.7% Cysticercus fasciolaris 9.2%
From the above results, it is considered that the house rats especially R. norvegicus seemed to play an important role as a reservoir host in those helminthic infectons of zoonotic nature in Korea.
